St Mel's Church, Ardagh

This small rectangular church has a lintelled west doorway and westward projecting antae at the ends of the north and south walls. It is associated with St Mel who was a disciple of St Patrick.



Many early churches, dating from the 10th - 12th century have this style of doorway. Some very good examples can be seen at Glendalough, Co Wicklow, Tuamgraney, Co Clare and Killevy, Co Armagh.



Antae are also associated with early churches and good examples may be seen at St John's Point, Co Down and St Fechin's Church, Fore, Co Westmeath
