Aghalee Old Church

Map Reference: J128655 (3128, 3655)

Aghalee Old Church is covered with thick ivy. This obscures architectural detail and makes trying to date the building very difficult. Only the west gable and portions of the north and south walls remain. There is a very fine bullaun stone embedded in the wall of the ruin. O’Laverty recorded a double-sided bullaun on the site but there is now no trace of this. The land on which the church stands was once part of Bangor Abbey and traces of a large enclosure suggest that it may have been a pre-Norman foundation.
