Cockhill Windmill Tower, Drumanphy

Map reference: H943564 (2943, 3564)

I know of only three windmill towers in Co Armagh. This one at Cockhill was built in the first quarter of the 18th century by Edward Hoope. By the 1830s it had fallen out of use and was in a state of disrepair. In 1910 the conical cap was removed and replaced by a flat roof. The crenellations were built around the parapet and all the machinery was removed. The present structure looks like a small castle or a folly. The presence of two doorways gives the clue to its former function. It stands on the top of a hill in the middle of an apple orchard.
