An Rath, Ballyallaban

Map Reference: M224048 (1224, 2048)

An earthen ring fort is a very rare structure in the Burren. This circular rath is about 30m internally diameter. It has a substantial inner bank which rises up to 9m above the bottom of the surrounding ditch.

This fosse is usually full of water. A good outer bank surrounds the rath giving an overall diameter of about 60m. Across the roadway, just opposite the entrance to the rath, is a laneway running SSE towards Ballyallaban House. A short diastance along this laneway is a small cross on a plinth. At the base of the plinth is a very fine bullaun stone (M227044).
