The Tau Cross, Corrofin

For many years this cross stood in a field near the roadside about 2km NW of Kilnaboy Church. It has now been safely gathered in to the Heritage Centre at Corrofin. It is a single T-shaped piece of limestone 43cm high and 69cm across. On the upper surface of the transom, near each outer edge, is a carved human mask. The antiquity, purpose and origins of the structure are uncertain.
