Cratloemoyle Castle

This castle stands close to the main Limerick-Galway dual carriageway a few miles from Limerick City. It is unfortunately full of litter and graffiti, probably because of its proximity to the city. It may have been built in the 16th century by the MacNamara clan and was owned by Sean MacConmara in 1570. It later passed to the chiefs of MacConmara. John MacNamara, who died in 1780, was the last known occupant. The castle was bought in 1973 by an Irish American and remains in his ownership today.



The ground floor of the castle contains a beautiful fireplace and some blocked up windows.





The first floor has collapsed but it is still possible to reach the garderobe on this floor by climbing a few pallets.



The second floor can be reached by a very worn staircase.



The second floor has two fireplaces, one ordinary and one ornate.



There are also plenty of windows on this floor and a passage which leads to the garderobe. The third floor has collapsed. The fourth floor is still there however it is unaccessible.

The castle has its own private chapel just twenty metres from the church however it is completely overgrown.
