Shanagarry Castle

Map reference: W980666 (1980, 0666)

The remains of Shanagarry Castle consist two storeys of the east wall and part of the ground floor of the south wall. When I visited the site in 1984 the only noticeable feature was a fireplace. The above photograph was taken then. On a return visit in 2010 I found that this wall was only accessible from the outside and now forms part of a recent building.

Other old buildings close to the south wall of the castle probably date from the 19th century. The castle was probably built by the Power family in the 16th century. It passed to the Penn family in the 1660s and was the occasional residence of William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, USA.
