St Colmcille is said to have founded a monastery on Tory Island in the 6th century. In 612 it was devastated by a fleet and four years later the church was re-erected. The island was used as a refuge by religious during the reign of Queen Elizabeth. In 1595 it was ruined and plundered by George Bingham. At the head of the pier in West Town is a T-shaped, or tau, cross carved from a single block of stone.
