Clonlea Cross Base, Greenan

Map Reference: J118222 (3118, 3222)

Among other monuments, the little graveyard at Clonlea contains two tall crosses. They are plain copies of the cross at Kilbroney and are probably no earlier than the 19th century. The S cross is set in a square stone base measuring 71cm by 56cm. It has a central socket 40cm by 20cm, which is far too large for the cross. The upper surface of the base is decorated with angle scrolls at the corners of the sockets and panels, possibly of interlace or key pattern, on the east and west sides, between the scrolls. The decoration has been greatly weathered and the exact nature of the patterns is not clear.
