Dunsoghly Castle

Map Reference: O118432 (3118, 2432)

Dunsoghly Castle was built by Sir Thomas Plunkett about the middle of the 15th century. It has a four-storey central block with square corner tower which have corbelled roofing.

The roof of the main building has been partially replaced but is otherwise the last 15th-16th century roof in the country to survive.

The castle has many large rectangular window opening which are probably later insertions. However many of the small defensive loops survive. These include some fine corner loops.

The building has a very fine barrel vault over the ground floor.

Parts of the original bawn wall are incorporated into neighbouring farm buildings. Just to the south of the castle is a small chapel with some carving over the north doorway.
