Monkstown Castle

Originally built in 13th or 14th century by monks from St Mary’s Cistercian Abbey. However the existing built dates mainly from the late 15th century with later additions. It has a four-storey tower topped by good Irish crenellations and remains of a machicolation. It stands at the corner of a bawn which has a three-storey gatehouse with good wicker-marks. The bawn was repaired in the 19th century.
