Galloon Graveyard

Map Reference: H391227 (2391, 3227)

At one time Galloon Graveyard had four High Crosses. All that remains are parts of the shafts of two of them. Both of them are richly carved but they are greatly weathered and not all of the scenes can be discerned.

The East Cross is closer to the gate of the graveyard. On its west face can be seen The Adoration of the Magi, The Baptism of Christ and St Paul & St Anthony in the Desert. On the east face is The Sacrifice of Isaac, some interlace and a panel showing three figures. This is interpreted by some as Moses, Aaron & Hur, and by others as a possible Resurrection Scene. On the narrow north face the lower panel may show Samuel kissing Saul or David, and the upper panel may show Samuel anointing Saul or David. Between these panels are two animals.

At the top of the east face of the West Cross is Adam & Eve, below this is Daniel in the Lions' Den, and at the bottom is The Baptism of Christ. The panels on the west face show Noah's Ark, The Sacrifice of Isaac and The Three Hebrew Children in the Fiery Furnace.

In the graveyard there is a good collection of 18th century gravestones. The photos below illustrate both sides of two examples.

The inscription reads: This monument is erected by Oyn (?) Doyle also his father Dinnis Doyle and his wife Elizabeth Doyle......Gravestones of this design are also found in graveyards at Clones, Donagh, Drumsnat, Clonfeacle and Clogher.

The inscription reads: Pray for the soul of Patk Dunigan who decd Jany ye 20 1746 aged 38 years. Gravestones of this design are also found in graveyards at Clones, Drumsnat, Donaghmoyline, Tedavnet, Edergole and Drumlane.
