Riverville Castle, Ballynahivnia

Map Reference: M557208 (1557, 2208)

A close inspection of this castle was not possible. From the roadside it can be seen that the entrance is in the east wall near the NE corner. All worked stone has been removed from the outer doorway but the pointed inner doorway is clearly visible. It is possible that there is a small guard chamber to the right of the doorway. The nature of the stairway cannot be determined. The castle is at least four storeys high but the top storey is incomplete. The building appears to be lit throughout by small slit windows. Some of these are plain and others have ogee heads. There are at least two good corner slits. The castle may be vaulted above the first floor. This is a Burke castle.
