Dunmore Friary

Map Reference: M512637 (1512, 2637)

This friary was founded in 1425 for the Augustinian Friars by Malter de Bermingham, 9th Baron Athenry. Indulgences were granted in 1430 to those who helped build the friary and equip the church. The O Kellys were generous benefactors. At the time of the suppression the friary claimed poverty and was not dissolved. However the land was finally granted to John Burke fitzThomas in 1574. The friars had remained on the site until 1569 and by the middle of the next century 30 friars were said to be still in the district. They finally moved to Athlone in 1809. Only the ruin of the church remains today. It is a nave and chancel church with a central tower.

There is a fine, decorative 15th century west doorway, as well as several other good decorated stones.
