Foulkscourt Castle

Map Reference: S283678 (2283, 1678)

Very little is known about the history of this castle. It is hidden away 1km down the driveway of a long abandoned house so only the locals know of its existence.

The castle was enclosed by a bawn but only the east portion of this remains. In the middle of this bawn is a 3 storey tower which overlooked the main entrance. This tower has several arrow slits and a latrine chute.

The castle itself is 5 storeys high. The floors have long collapsed however the roof can still be reached by the well preserved spiral staircase.

On entering the main door there is a low guardroom to your right and an unusual cross shaped slit in front of you.

To the left is the entrance to the cellar area and also a mural stairway which turns into a spiral stairway on the 1st floor. On the 1st floor there is a murder hole room which overlooks the main entrance. All of the floors on the 2nd and 3rd floors have collapsed. On the 4th floor the spiral staircase ends and you have to walk out across a grassy ledge to reach another mural stairway which leads to the roof.

On the roof there is a large chimney and narrow walkway all around the castle. Most of the protective parapet and crenellations are missing,
