Foulksrath Castle
Map Reference: S463667 (2463, 1667)
Foulksrath Castle was built by the de Frenes who were succeeded 15th century by the Purcells. It is protected by a large polygonal bawn except on the south side where there is a moat. The castle is at least five storeys high and there are good crenellations and roof weepers.
The bawn may be entered through a fine vaulted gatehouse and it has some very good defensive loops.
At the NE corner is a dovecot with a very fine corbelled roof. There are only two rows of roosts intact.
The castle is now a Youth Hostel.
