St Canice's Cathedral, Kilkenny

St Canice's Cathedral occupies the site of an earlier church which was burned in 1085 and in 1114. The cathedral was begun by Bishop Hugh de Mapilton and was probably completed by 1280. Most of the existing building dates from the 13th century, though the tower was added in the 14th century. There were extensive restorations in the middle of the 19th century.

The cathedral contains one of the finest collections of 16th and 17th century memorials in Ireland. They range from magnificent tomb chests with weepers and high relief effigies to the more simple trapezoidal coffin lids with floreated crosses. There is also a good 13th century baptismal font.

To the south of the church is a Round Tower which has lost its conical top. It is about 30m high.

The simple round-headed doorway is about 3m above ground level.
