Newtown Castle

Map Reference: S465438 (2465, 1438)

Newtown Castle has been dated to 1628. However the style of building is at least 100 years earlier. There is a pointed doorway in the N wall but no sign of a machicolation. There is a large murder-hole between the inner and outer doorway. A spiral stairway rises on the left but it is blocked by wooden hurdles. The rectangular ground floor room has large window recesses. The first floor room may be entered from the stairway. There is a vault above this. The windows appear to be all small slits and there are no crenellations. Ivy covers half the wall and obscures detail.
