Timahoe Round Tower

Map Reference: S537902 (2537, 1902)

St Mochua mac Lonan founded a monastery at Timahoe in the 7th century. It is mentioned many times in the Annals. The oratory was burned by the Norsemen in 919 and Gillamaire was slain in the doorway in 1069. The Round Tower is about 29m high and is one of the best preserved in the country.

It features a very fine double Romanesque doorway about 5m above ground level. There are four receding orders divided in two pairs by a narrow alcove in the centre. The capitals of the pillars are decorated with human masks with intertwined beards and hair. There is a round-headed window at the second floor of the tower and four pointed windows at the top. It was probably built in the 12th century.

The monastery was re-founded in later medieval times by the O'Mores. After the Suppression it was granted to Sir Thomas Loftus and later to Richard Crosby. The Crosby family fortified the medieval church and incorporated it into a castle. Only the east wall of the castle remains.
