Meelick Round Tower

Map Reference: M331974 (1331, 2974)

This Round Tower stands to full height but with its conical cap missing. It is about 21.5m high and 5.5m external diameter.

The doorway, which is 1.68m high, is set about 3.5m above ground level. It is about 75cm wide at its base and tapers to 63cm. The head of the doorway is an arch of five stones. The tower is lit by six windows, two of which have angle heads of 90 degrees. The other windows are square-headed. The tower is unusual in that there is a stone vault above the first floor. It is pierced by a ladder-hole. It is not clear if this is an original feature. Similar vaults have been found at Castledermot and Tory Island but neither are in good condition.

Attached to the base of the exterior wall is an old gravestone with interlaced ornament and the old Irish inscription OR DO GRICOUR.
