Donore Castle

Donore Castle is a three-storey tower-house with rounded corners and projecting round tower at the SW corner. This tower houses a spiral stairway. The doorway in the west wall is protected by a machicolation at roof level. A vaulted loft above the ground floor may be entered from the stairs. Above the vault there is a fireplace and a garderobe in the NW corner. There are windows with seats in N, E and S walls. In 1429 King Henry VI promised a grant of £10 to each of his subjects within the Pale who built a castle 20 feet long, 16 feet wide and 40 feet high before 1439. Donore Castle conforms closely to these measurements and it is probably one of these £10 castles.
