Kilmeelchon Fort

Map Reference: N003156 (2003, 2156)

This small fort stands a short distance to the west of Banagher, near the east bank of the River Shannon. It is a polygonal structure with a small rectangular building in the centre. There are four gun emplacements along the wall facing the river.

The fort is surrounded by a substantial ditch and a broad stone-faced bank except on the east side where the entrance is. At times of high water levels on the Shannon the ditch is liable to be flooded.

The fort probably dates from the early 19th century when much of the Lower Shannon was fortified.
