Bellegrove House, Rathdaire Demesne

This fragmentary pump stands near Bellegrove House, Rathdaire Demense. It is missing its handle and lid, and only a fragment of the spout remains. However it has a very clear inscription which reads: Daniel P Curtis, 45 William Street, Dublin. Investigation shows that Daniel Curtis may have been an iron-monger and tin manufacturer. However it is not known if he made pumps or just sold them. In the 1901 census he is labelled "plumber" and in the 1911 census he is labelled "plumbing contracter. He was born in Gloucester. He died in 1919 aged 70 and is buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery with his wife, Eliza Pidge, and three daughters.

The pump was photographed by Conor Finn. Many thanks, Conor
