Carrowmore Passage Tomb Cemetery

Map Reference: centred on G662335 (1662, 3335)

This is the largest cemetery of megalithic tombs in Ireland. Due to modern gravel quarrying some of the monuments have been disturbed and some may have been completely destroyed.

There are about 70 existing tombs and about 20 other tombs which have been destroyed. They are mostly small passage tombs which would have been originally covered in a round cairn.

Many of them appear now as small dolmens. Some of them are surrounded by a circular stone kerb which would have retained the cairn. In some cases the burial chamber has disappeared and the kerb has remained looking like a small stone circle.
