Roscrea Franciscan Friary

Map Reference: S135891 (2135, 1891)

This was founded some time before 1477 but some sources suggest that the was founded about 1490 by Molrony O’Carroll or his wife Bibiana. After the Suppression it was granted to the Earl of Thomond who assigned it to William Crow. In 1579 the friars fled from Roscrea when the friary was ruined by the Protestants. Fr Thady Daly escaped to limerick but was captured and later put to death.

Very little remains of the friary except for the north and east walls and the central bell-tower. Fragments of carved stones and window tracery are now mounted on the walls.
