Altmore Court Tomb

Map Reference: H668696 (2668, 3696)

This court tomb stands on undulating ground which slopes downwards to the west. The tomb is orientated E-W. At the east end there are remains of a court and one burial chamber. The orthostats are larger than most of the megalithic tombs in the area. There is a large flat slab standing near what would have been the mouth of the court.

The cairn is over 60m long and about 13m wide. The remains of the court indicate that it may have been about 8m wide. The chamber consists of four side stones and a back stone. There are two orthostats at the west end. Part of the court and the entrance to the burial chamber are clearly visible. There is a great deal of cairn material but it is greatly overgrown and not all of it is original.
