Newmills Bullaun Stone

Map Reference: H815676 (2815, 3676)

This is a substantial boulder with two large bullauns. It may have been a round boulder originally but about a quarter of it has been removed including the edge of one of the bullauns. The stone stands outside the Church of Ireland building which is on the site of a medieval church and possibly a pre-Norman foundation. Excavation revealed post and stake holes of a round house of Early Christian date with an enclosing ditch. In the graveyard there is a rectangular stone carved with skull and crossbones. It has a raised letter inscription round the edge. However the stone is partly covered with moss and leaf debris and not all of the inscription is legible.
